Why do I need camera enclosures for my machine vision system?

Often cameras used in industrial machine vision applications are nestled into tight spots within manufacturing equipment so that they are in the best position to capture images of products being inspected. The optimal position for these cameras is frequently in a harsh industrial environment where they may be exposed to dust, oil, temperature fluctuations, water, and chemical cleaning agents. Cameras may also be prone to accidental disturbance by service personnel or machine operators performing routine maintenance on the surrounding equipment.

If cameras are not adequately protected from the hazards of their surrounding environment, the result is irreparable damage resulting in significant replacement costs. In addition if cameras are accidentally moved out of position, costly machine downtime is incurred while cameras are repositioned and inspection integrity is reestablished.

The CE-030 Camera Enclosure provides a cost-effective solution designed specifically for the protection of machine vision cameras in harsh industrial environments. The bottom line is that by using CE-030 Camera Enclosures, your machine vision system will be more reliable and less likely to cause production downtime.

Will my camera fit into your enclosure?

The CE-030 camera enclosure was designed to accept a wide range of machine vision cameras and lenses from a variety of different manufacturers of machine vision equipment. During the order process you will be required to provide specific information about the make and model of the camera and lens you plan to use with each camera enclosure. We will take this information and customize each enclosure to fit your specific camera/lens configuration.

Can the CE-030 Camera Enclosure be used in a food processing or pharmaceutical
     manufacturing facility?

Yes. We make a version of the CE-030 Camera Enclosure that is made entirely of FDA approved materials and is therefore suitable for use in food processing or pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. All of our enclosures are designed to minimize the effect of any physical features that may act as moisture traps.

Will a large connector on the end of my camera cable pass through the CE-030
  Camera Enclosure?

Yes. The base of the CE-030 enclosure was designed to allow large cable connectors often found on machine vision cameras to easily pass through the base. The cable gland opening in the enclosure base is 1.5” in diameter. Once the camera cable is through the enclosure base, the cable feed-thru seal provides a water-resistant and dust-proof barrier between the inside and the outside of the camera enclosure. See the picture below for an idea of the size of cable connector that will pass through the enclosure base.

What are IP and NEMA ratings?

International standard IEC 60529 classifies the level of protection that electrical enclosures provide against the intrusion of solid objects or dust, accidental contact, and water. The resulting Ingress Protection (IP) rating is identified by a code that consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter . NEMA 250-2003 is a comparable US standard defined by the National Electrical Manufacturer's Association. Here is a short description of the most common IP and NEMA ratings used for sealed products intended for use in harsh environments. For more information please refer to the official IEC and NEMA web sites:

IP Ratings: http://www.iec.ch

  NEMA Ratings: http://www.nema.org/stds/250.cfm

IP54 / NEMA 2

Protected against splashing water and the ingress of most dust.

IP65 / NEMA 4

Completely protected against the ingress of dust and against low-pressure water jets.

NEMA 4X

Same as NEMA 4 with the added benefit of being corrosion proof.

IP67 / NEMA 6

Can be immersed in water under defined conditions and completely protected against the ingress of dust.

The CE-030 Camera Enclosure was designed to meet the level of sealing as specified by the IP65 rating.

Can MachineVisionEnclosures.com design a custom enclosure for my camera/lens
     configuration?

While most commonly used machine vision cameras and lenses will be suited to our standard CE-030 camera enclosure, occasionally we come across a camera that requires modification to our standard enclosure or even a custom designed enclosure to suit its exact specifications. MachineVisionEnclosures.com has a full-service engineering department capable of designing custom-made camera enclosures. Engineering documentation of custom enclosures including detail drawings and parts lists can also be made available upon request.
